Scribe moding isn't a "hack" if done right in a stock or semi custom situation. If you have high quality craftsmen on both sides, then you should not have any scribe molding. It all comes down to whether or not the cabinets were actually a true custom build and the skill set of someone who installs those custom cabinets. Also, "custom" cabinet manufacuring isn't what it used to be either, with cabinet makers ordering doors and carcasses from wholesale manufacturers and then calling themselves "custom" rather than building in shop to the 1/32" exactness that you would expect from the word "custom". They mainly focus on a quick intall so they can move on to the next client. Sadly, it's also invaded custom cabinetry, mainly because the skill level of the installers of custom cabinetry isn't what is used to be and the new guys coming along don't know what "scribing" is in a cabinet install situation. Scribe molding is widely used by installers of stock and semi custom cabinetry. but with those top cab doors it limits your options. If you had shaker/mission style cabinet in oak you could get away with more. If you do paint or stain remember to always do your final clear coats as well or it will chip and stick with weather change. if you are going to paint anything espresso do the island only. remember the oak will be a different finish than a maple/alder/cherry which is a tight grain. this will give a very rich, warm and classic feel. Our recommendation if you are going to paint the cabinets go with a cream base color and either a hazelnut or butterscotch glaze accent. when you go darker it dates these doors even more with something like an espresso. (2) Your top cabinet doors are an arch/cathedral/eyebrow style which typically shows better in lighter colors than darker. (1) the material oak has a very defined open grain, dark colors show this even more almost a raised look of the grain. The biggest issue you are going to have with changing the color of your cabinets is 2 fold. Hope this helps some more with your choices. If it hadn't been, then it would look too much like a turquoise crayon picture in a more refined oil painting of traditional rustic tones. IMO, the more subdued turquoise in the Rustic III photo looks just fine with those other surfaces, but it is because has been toned down to give it a rather classic look. That looks like what they did in the Rustic III photo, though, as the blue cabinets look like they have more on their surface than just a regular coat of paint. The color really did look a lot like the ones on the cabinets, but it is very vibrant, so you would probably have to tone it down with a glaze. Here is a link to a photo someone took on Flikr of an open can of the paint color-you will have to either belong to Flikr(or yahoo)or join to see the photo. There was a poster, whose title is The Shabby Nest, who suggested a Valspar color called Filoli Morning Glory. I took the liberty of looking at the designer's comments about the turquoise cabinets, and she said that they were done by a local person and were a mixture of things, so they are basically a custom job, so it wouldn't be a matter of just buying the paint and achieving the same effect. ![]() However, at the bottom right of the photo there is turquoise cabinet with a dark wood counter, and that wood looks more like a cherry finish to me, as it seems to have a reddish tone. There are actually three natural wood finishes on the different cabinets besides the turquoise one, and one of them is a dark wood, although it looks more like mahogany to me than cherry. I enlarged the Rustic III picture, and I noticed something that isn't-or it wasn't to me, anyway-apparent by just looking at the smaller one.
